Crime Prevention Yukon is looking for a volunteer who could act as recording secretary at our monthly board meetings. Meetings occur the 2nd Tuesday of every month from 7-9pm. The recording secretary would be responsible for typing into a laptop computer the progress of the Board meetings agenda (i.e. business arising from minutes, motions actions etc.) and would not be responsible for transcribing or recording verbatim. It would be beneficial if the volunteer had previous knowledge or experience with board processes and/or minute taking, but we would be glad to see this as a learning opportunity. No Fixed Address Outreach Van – M (updated 25/02/09)
The No Fixed Address Outreach Van is a collaborative program that reaches out to the most marginalized individuals in the city of Whitehorse. Since April 2002, the NFA Outreach Van has provided food, clothing, nursing, harm reduction material and Counseling to street-involved people who are at risk. The van currently travels the streets of Whitehorse six nights a week with the aim of reducing the harmful effects of poverty, drug and alcohol use, and homelessness.
The van service is coordinated by Many Rivers Counseling and Support Services in partnership with Blood Ties Four Directions Centre, Kwanlin Dun First Nations and Kaushee’s Place Transition Home. At current there is 17 staff who work the van including the Outreach Van coordinator.
The mandate of the NFA Outreach Van is to provide a mobile community outreach program meeting a variety of health, safety and social needs. The van “goes to” where the target population gathers. Staff use a harm reduction approach in providing a variety of services to people living on the margins of our community who do not access existing programs and services for a variety of reasons. The purpose of the van initiative is to improve the quality of life in the immediate present and to provide the person with timely opportunities should they choose to make changes in their lifestyle. The “No Fixed Address” Outreach Van program complements existing services.
Services provided are: Safety and Support, Counseling, Education Referrals, and Health Services. The service runs from Monday thru Saturday from 5-9 pm.
Currently the van has 35 food volunteers who bake, cook, and prepare a variety of food items for the service six nights a week. Also, over 20 local businesses and agencies prepare food, provide basics such as clothing, water, and fuel for the Outreach Van. The volunteers are an integral part of the program. Funding is made possible by Yukon Territory Government, Health and Social Services, United Way, Rotary Club and many private citizens, organizations and church groups.
Throughout the 2007/08 fiscal year the Van had 13,870 contacts. This number is a significant increase from the 7878 contacts the Van saw throughout the entire previous fiscal year. Individuals who have accessed the Van received a variety of services including food, clothing, personal care items, harm reduction supplies, counseling and nursing support. Specifically, 91% of individuals accessed the Van for food services and 41% of clients accessed harm reduction supplies.

The store is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from noon until 2:00 pm. As part of a small team of dedicated volunteers, you will be asked to work independently in the store following training.
